What is cataract?
Cataract is a common ailment in which the human lens in our eye is blurred. It usually occurs middle age onwards but it is not rare to occur in younger ages or even at birth. The occurrence may be caused or accelerated by the use of medications, by injuries and some diseases, ocular as well as systemic.
What are the symptoms of cataract?
The patient with cataract experiences primarily blurred vision. The decreased visual acuity can not be corrected using a device such as eyeglasses or contact lenses. The patient complains about the condition affecting daily life, impeding activities such as reading, driving especially at night, watching television, computer-work, mobile phone use, etc.
Treatment for cataract?
The treatment for cataract is solely microsurgery. There are no medications to treat or inhibit the development of cataract. The modern operating technique we use to treat cataract is called phacoemulsification. Prior to the operation we calculate the power of the intraocular lens to be installed with the most accurate machines available (ZEISS IOL MASTER, ultrasound measuring). During phacoemulsification, under local anesthesia, usually induced by eye-drops, and through a very small incision the human lens is emulsified by means of ultrasound, is aspirated and finally replaced by another artificial intraocular lens which is implanted and remains there for the rest of the patient’s life. Less frequently other techniques are used such as the extracapsular and intracapsular extraction of cataract. The patient remains for a few hours in the hospital and returns promptly to daily activities. The operation is performed with the latest ultrasound equipment.
